How to check a California auto shop's BAR registration

Who must register with the Bureau of Automotive Repair, the signs and online ad details to look for, how to look a shop up and how to read each listing.

Every business in California that repairs or diagnoses vehicles for money must be registered with the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR). The registration is cheap to check and tells you more than most people realize. This guide explains what registration means, what to look for at the shop and online, and how to read the details on this site.

Registration is required for each location

Business and Professions Code section 9884.6(a) makes it "unlawful for any person to be an automotive repair dealer unless that person has registered in accordance with this chapter and unless that registration is currently valid." Under section 9884 a dealer pays a fee and registers for each place of business it operates, so a chain has a separate registration number for every shop. The registration form identifies the business name, phone, email, every location, any fictitious business name, the owners and officers who control the business, and a statement that local zoning allows vehicle repair at the site. Mobile mechanics register too and must give the license plate of the repair vehicle.

The rule covers far more than general mechanics: body shops, transmission shops, tire and brake shops, glass and tint installers, car dealers' service departments and mobile repair vans all need an automotive repair dealer (ARD) registration. Smog Check stations and vehicle safety systems inspection stations need an ARD registration plus a separate station license.

What you should see at the shop

BAR requires shops to post its automotive repair dealer sign, and Smog Check stations must also post their station-type sign (test-only or test-and-repair) and a notice to consumers. The ARD registration and any station licenses must be displayed where customers can easily see them, and Smog Check stations must also post their inspectors' and technicians' licenses. Mobile repair dealers must give you a paper copy of the ARD sign with each work order and show the business name, registration number and phone number on each repair vehicle.

What you should see online

Under BAR's online advertising rule (California Code of Regulations section 3371.2), every online ad must include the business name and ARD registration number as registered with BAR, and the phone number registered with BAR. The shop's website must display the same information somewhere easy to find, such as the contact page or footer. An ad or website without a registration number is a reason to ask questions before you hand over your keys.

How to look up a shop

  1. Find the shop on this site by city or name. Each listing shows the BAR registration number, the date the registration was first issued, the expiry date, the county, and any Smog Check or safety systems inspection license at the same name and address.
  2. Confirm the number on the state's DCA License Search (choose the Bureau of Automotive Repair). The state's record is the authority, and BAR's consumer page notes that it also shows any disciplinary history.
  3. Make sure the name and address on the estimate match the registration. A different name can be a legitimate fictitious business name, so ask.

Reading the listing details

Registered since. The original issue date of the registration. Older registrations in BAR's file carry only a year, which we show as the year alone. A long-running registration at the same location tells you the business has renewed every year, but it is not a quality rating. Ownership changes usually mean a new registration, so a new number does not always mean a new shop.

Status and expiry. We list only registrations BAR shows as Active with an expiry date that had not passed. ARD registrations are renewed annually. A shop that is missing here may have renewed after BAR's last monthly file or may be registered under a different name; check the DCA License Search rather than assuming anything.

Smog Check station. If BAR's file shows a test-and-repair, test-only or repair-only station license at the same business name and address, we show its number and type. Matching is by name and address, so a station registered under a different name will not appear on the shop's listing.

Vehicle safety systems inspection station. These stations inspect revived salvage vehicles and certain other vehicles before DMV registration. See our guide to safety systems inspections.

What registration does and doesn't tell you

Registration means the business is known to BAR, has given it ownership and location details, and is subject to the Automotive Repair Act. Under section 9884.7 BAR can deny, suspend, revoke or place on probation a registration for misleading statements, fraud, gross negligence, failing to give customers copies of documents they sign, departing from accepted trade standards, or doing unauthorized work. Where a dealer has several locations, BAR usually acts against the specific location, but can act against all of them for a course of repeated and willful violations.

Registration does not certify a mechanic's skill or guarantee the price. Unlike a Smog Check station, a general repair shop does not have to employ state-licensed technicians, so ask about training and certifications, read the estimate, and keep your paperwork.

Red flags

If you run into trouble, BAR mediates disputes and investigates unlicensed repair activity. File online at bar.ca.gov/complaint and include your estimate and invoice.
